| Burma has been hit by a cyclone of winds up to 120mph for 10 hours on Friday night and early Saturday morning last week. Current reports state the death toll as 22,500, with 41,000 people missing and 2 million people left homeless. The numbers will increase as more assessment is done in the next few days and aides become accessible to regions that have been completely flattened out by the storm surge. There is still no electricity available, and so water pumps don’t work, causing shortage of water for the residents. Roads are blocked by fallen trees and electrical poles, and debris from homes, so basic supplies such as food, gas, and building material cannot reach the area. Some parts of the area are still flooded and dead bodies litter the streets, causing high risk for diseases. It is rainy season in Burma, and hundreds of thousands of people are without shelter. |
Burma is one of the poorest nations in the world with 90% of her people living under poverty line (US$1 per day), and recovery from this disaster will be difficult for her people without outside assistance.
